The Serrano House is sited in a land over one of the hills bordering the East zone of the city of Santiago.  The project has been approached from the possibility of looking at the city from a great height in a 180 degrees angle. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the presumed appearance of neighboring buildings affects volumetry towards the formation of a pavilion apparently opaque in its lateral walls, which remains on the landscape to generate a punctual relationship with the scenario in only one axis.

The operation starts establishing a terrace formation (the soil is developed into levels following its gradient), so as to make uneven the foreground.  With this, the basal level of the house stays half-buried, protecting itself from the neighbours, by means of its own soil.  At this level, the common precincts are within a space which is preferably transparent, basically formed by steel columns and glass large windows.

The second level starts from the top line of the land, horizontally stretching over the gradient, for it to remain in some state of flotation with respect to the hill.  The volume is formed of reinforced concrete fully lined in a second wood coat leaving behind this surface all the windows that allow ventilations and view.  The wood closing generates a sort of shutter that at this level protects the interior from exposure, and at the same time, controls the ingoing light.  This coat is, at the northern façade, a system of wood sliding doors that stretches horizontally on the exterior of the house.  In this level are the bedrooms and some living rooms, besides an interior yard that serves the dormitories that do not share the city view.

The third level has been worked as a wooden deck, covering the dormitories, where a more direct relationship with the scenario has been established.  This is a belvedere that domains almost the full view towards the west.

A vertical volume of reinforced concrete links these horizontal strata.  Located at the higher sector of the land, this tower generates the vertical circulations, and at the same time, orders the relations systems among the different precincts.  At each level of this volume, a small living space is proposed to serve the adjacent precincts, remaining at the third floor a precinct to be used as studio, from which it is possible to access the deck of the house.

The materials used are reinforced concrete (at sight), steel, glass and an Amazonian wood Almendrillo.

La Casa Serrano se encuentra ubicada en un terreno sobre uno de los cerros que bordean la zona oriente de la ciudad de Santiago. El proyecto se aborda desde la posibilidad de observar la ciudad a una gran altura en un ángulo de 180 grados. Pese a lo anterior, la supuesta aparición de construcciones vecinas compromete la volumetría hacia la conformación de un pabellón aparentemente opaco en sus laterales que se mantiene sobre el paisaje para generar una relación puntual con el contexto visual en un solo eje.

La operación comienza por establecer un aterrazamiento del terreno, de modo de desnivelar el primer plano. Con esto, el nivel base de la casa queda semi enterrado, protegiéndose de los vecinos mediante su propio suelo. En este nivel, los recintos comunes se encuentran dentro de un espacio preferentemente transparente, constituido básicamente por columnas de acero y ventanales de vidrio.

El segundo nivel parte desde la línea superior del terreno desplazándose horizontalmente sobre la pendiente, de modo de quedar en un cierto estado de flotación respecto del cerro. Se compone de un volumen de hormigón armado forrado completamente en una segunda piel de madera, dejando tras esta superficie, todos los vanos que permiten las ventilaciones y las vistas. El cierro de madera genera una suerte de persiana que protege en este nivel de la exposición hacia el interior, a la vez que regula las entradas de luz hacia el interior. Esta piel es, en la fachada norte, un sistema de correderas que se desplazan horizontalmente por el exterior de la casa. En este nivel se ubican los dormitorios y algunos recintos de estar, además de un patio interior que sirve a los dormitorios que no participan de la vista hacia la ciudad.

El tercer nivel se trabaja como un deck de madera, cubierta de los dormitorios, en el cual se establece una relación más directa con el contexto. Este es un mirador que domina casi la totalidad de la vista hacia el poniente.

Un volumen vertical de hormigón visto vincula estos estratos horizontales. Ubicado en el sector más alto del terreno, esta torre genera las circulaciones verticales a la vez que ordena los sistemas de relaciones entre los distintos recintos. En cada nivel de este volumen se propone un pequeño estar que sirve a los recintos contiguos, quedando en el tercer piso un recinto que sirve de estudio desde el cual se accede a la cubierta de la casa.

Los materiales utilizados son hormigón armado (visto), acero, vidrio y madera de Almendrillo.
